Dentures are removable appliances created to replace missing teeth. Most dentures are made of acrylic, and are designed to restore your smile. If you’ve lost some or all of your teeth, due to tooth decay, injury or gum disease, replacing your missing teeth with dentures will help you speak and eat better and improve your appearance and smile.
Dentures provide support for your cheek and lips. When you lose your teeth, your facial muscles will sag and this makes you look older. Dentures help fill out the appearance of your face and profile.
Types of dentures
Dentures can be made as an immediate denture- one that is inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted. The tissues are given time to heal under this appliance. A conventional denture is made after all the tissues and gums have healed. The upper one is usually flesh colored, and covers the roof of the mouth. The lower one is shaped like a horseshoe and leaves room for your tongue. It can be made of porcelain, plastic or a combination of both. Dentures can also be used to attach to dental implants for a more secure fit.
Dentures wear over the course of time, and eventually need to be replaced or realigned in order to keep your jaw alignment normal. Your jaw alignment slowly changes as your bone and gums recede. It’s important to maintain your regular dental checkups and appointments to monitor your mouth and be checked for any changes.
Caring for your dentures
- Rise your dentures before brushing to remove any loose food
- Brush daily to remove food particles and plaque
- Use a soft bristle toothbrush and non- abrasive cleanser to gentle brush all surfaces
- Also clean your mouth thoroughly, including your cheeks, roof of mouth, gums and cheeks.
- When you are not wearing them, put them in a safe place covered with water
- We can recommend appropriate cleansers and adhesives. The best kinds are the ones marked with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
