Dental Implants
Dental Implants
Dental Implants are the best method to replace missing teeth. There is no other tooth replacement option that is longer lasting. Unlike dentures that rest on the gumline or bridges that use adjacent teeth as anchors, dental implants are long-term replacements that your dentist surgically places in the jawbone.
Once you have replaced your teeth with dental implants, you can eat, talk and smile with confidence. Your smile and teeth appear natural. The implants are tiny posts, made of titanium, and placed into the jawbone where the teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium and creates a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
Facial contours are preserved because they prevent bone deterioration that usually occurs when teeth are missing. Sunken cheeks will created an older look. After replacing the tooth with an implant, there is a healing period. Then the implant is topped with a lifelike crown, custom made to match your existing teeth, and are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
First steps
The first step towards getting your implants is to schedule a dental implant evaluation with one of our dentists, to see if you are a good candidate. We will perform a comprehensive exam, take necessary x-rays, discuss your treatment options and answer any questions.
How Implants Work
During a minor surgical procedure, the dental implant is inserted directly into the jawbone in the space vacated by the missing tooth. There is then a healing period, for a couple of months before the last step, adding a tooth looking crown, is attached. The implant fuses to the bone surrounding it during the healing period.
Dental implant placement usually involves 2 surgical procedures. 1st, the implants are placed within your jawbone. Next, in the 3-6 months following your dental implant surgery, they rest beneath the surface of your gums, and are bonding with the jawbone in a healing period. At this time, you will be able to wear temporary dentures and consume a soft diet.
After the implant has bonded or fused to the jawbone, the 2nd phase begins. Your surgeon will uncover the implants and attach a healing collar. Impressions are made, and your new implant is created. The entire procedure takes 6-8 months, and usually is not a disruption to your life.
Care of your implant
Once your implant restoration is complete, it is important to keep your new implants clean and infection free. Your implant can collect plaque and tartar the same as real teeth. Remember to keep your regularly scheduled dental cleanings, and keep your implants clean daily.
Options for implants:
- Replace one tooth
- Replace several teeth
- Replace all upper or lower teeth
- Support removable dentures
Dental implants protect your jawbone, are installed permanently, won’t slip, and should last a lifetime.
