Dental sealants are plastic coatings that are placed on the surface of the back permanent teeth to help protect them from decay. This is the most likely location for a cavity to develop. The tiny little grooves on teeth in the back of your mouth can easily trap food particles and bacteria.
They are a simple procedure in which a coating made of acrylic, and tooth colored, is put on the surface of the tooth. The coating seals the tooth and grooves and acts as a barrier to protect the enamel from acid and plaque.
How long do sealants last?
Dental sealants can last up to ten years. It’s important for them to be checked at your regularly scheduled dental checkups to make sure they are not worn away or shipped. We can always add more sealant to repair an area that is worn. Sealants protect the grooves and depressions of your teeth that brushing and flossing can’t reach.
Children and adults can both benefit from dental sealants to prevent and lessen tooth decay. Contact your Gentle Dental office today to schedule an appointment.
