Bridges for missing teeth
A bridge- or bridgework can be done to replace missing teeth. A bridge spans the space of the missing tooth and requires at least 3 crowns. Two crowns are placed over healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth- and are called abutment teeth. Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges), or they can be removable. If more than one tooth is missing, more crowns will be needed to bridge the gap in between the abutment teeth.
Fixed bridges are applied by either bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth or by placing crowns on the abutment teeth. The number of abutment teeth necessary is influenced by the number of the missing teeth, the size and length of the abutment tooth roots, and the amount of bone support available to support the bridge. Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments.
Caring for your Bridgework
It’s important to brush and floss between all of your teeth, natural and restored to reduce the buildup of dental plaque. It’s important to maintain your crowns and bridges, and also schedule regular dental office cleanings and checkups. You may want to consider a night guard, if you grind your teeth at night, to protect your investment in your crowns and bridges.
What is involved in getting bridgework?
Getting a bridge and crowns usually takes 2-3 appointments. At your first visit, we prepare the teeth on either side of the gaps by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin. Impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to a lab where the bridgework is created. Fixed bridges are bonded into place and can only be removed by a dental professional. There are also removable bridges- that can be taken out and cleaned. You can discuss with your Gentle Dental dentist which option is right for you.
